“Taste of NSU” will showcase NSU’s performing and visual arts students, as well as inspired cuisine from area restaurants, NSU culinary arts students and our very special guest, Dr. Hattie N. Washington, educator, consultant, motivational speaker, author, founder of Aunt Hattie’s Place and Maryland Women’s Commission 2018 Hall Of Fame Inductee.

Dr. Washington is the author of “Driven to Succeed: Lessons Learned Through Faith, Family and Favor” and “Aunt Hattie’s Cookbook: Southern Comfort Foods and Beyond” and her soon-to-be-released picture book: 20/20 Insight and Foresight: Reflecting On The Past While Visioning The Future”.

She has received numerous awards, plaques, citations and other recognitions for her work with Aunt Hattie’s Place, Coppin State University, foster children and community organizations. Just a few, include: the 2013 Outstanding Service to Youth by the Montgomery County Commission on Youth and Families, Top 100 Minority Business Entrepreneurial of the Year (2009 and 2012), The Outstanding 2017 Graduate Faculty Award from Coppin State University; The Sister4Sister Network 15th Anniversary Jewel Diamond Taylor Inspirational Life Changer Legacy Award; and recently, The Maryland Women’s Commission 2018 Hall of Fame Award and the “2018 Business Award” by The National Association For Negro Business & Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc.

"My work with Aunt Hattie's Place (AHP), Baltimore City Schools, Maryland State Dept. of Education (MSDE) and at Coppin State University (CSU) were my ministries and grew out of my childhood experiences and a need to "give back" and “pay it forward".

Throughout my career, I have sought to uplift the lives of our youth while focusing on the unmet needs of foster boys, who were among the most disenfranchised and whose circumstances threatened to rob them of their dreams for a bright future. As the mother of two accomplished daughters (a physician & an attorney), my teachings and child-rearing strategies prepa2red me to lead AHP in providing numerous foster boys with the love, guidance, structure, and high expectation; whereby many have become productive young men whose dreams of hope and success have become a reality. I taught my daughters and my foster young men, ‘Yes, We Can; We MUST”.
